Adjustable inductance and method of changing inductance


Adjustable inductor is a commonly used inductive device. Nowadays, the inductance of the inductor is adjusted by the combination of iron core and circuit. There are three common methods.

1. Saturated inductance method

The saturation inductance method requires two windings on the core of the inductor: one is the working winding, which is connected to the alternating current; the other is the control winding, which is connected to the direct current. The saturation of the core is changed by changing the magnitude of the direct current in the control winding, thereby changing the inductance of the working winding. The working principle of the saturable reactor and the magnetic amplifier is to adjust the inductance based on this method.

2, switch control inductance method

The switch-controlled inductive method requires that the inductor and the triac are connected in series, and the inductance of the inductor is changed by turning on and off the triac. For example, in sinusoidal energy splitter AC regulated power supplies.

3, orthogonal core control inductance method

The orthogonal core control inductance method is to rotate one half of the C-shaped iron core by 90° and the other half to connect, half of the iron core is wound around the working winding, and the alternating current is passed; the other half of the iron core is wound around the control winding and is connected to the direct current. The amount of inductance of the working winding is varied by varying the amount of DC current in the control winding. For example, applications in switching power supplies, inverter power supplies, series compensators, and phase shifters.

The disadvantage of using a variable inductor to change the inductance is that there is a movable part and can only be adjusted manually.
